In order to get down into the bowls of the printer, you really should remove the cover, you have to remove 4 screws: the one in the picture, another on the left side of the printer, and two corresponding ones in some deep wells on the back of the printer. All desktop Epson printers that I've ever dealt with have the same screws in the same place. One mistake I make every time is I forget to disconnect the Printer cable and can't get the cover off, so be sure to disconnect it first and save yourself some hassle.
