Cleaning a desktop Epson printer - the hard way
Back in 1998, Royce asked me (Chris) if I could check to see why his Epson Stylus Color (bought for $600 back in 1994) was printing poorly. I decided the problem was ink buildup on the bottom of the head, so I pulled the printer apart and cleaned it. Over the past 2 years we've had quite a few calls from people whose printers are acting funny and want to clean them, unfortunately I wasn't able to document the procedure I did to the Stylus Color. We've also received quite a few calls from people who have run 5 or more cleaning cycles on their printer and it still isn't coming clean, here's a tidbit for you: Our Epson Stylus Color 3000 has the worst yellow head you could imagine, I've done 30+ cleaning cycles just to get it to work, and the next day I had to start all over again! Right now it seems to be working fine though, maybe it was just sun spots!
My wife and I needed a printer for our home, and I noticed a Stylus Photo 700 sitting under a desk here. Royce allowed me to use the printer, but there was one problem: it was under the desk because it's heads were almost completely clogged. Bouts with several 3rd party archival inks and being left unused for a few months had rendered it almost useless. I decided to clean it, but this time I would document the ordeal.
I was successfully able to get the printer working, with all nozzles firing. I also discovered some interesting things about the engineering of these desktop printers. So let's get to it and see how I did it:
