Loading Canvas in the Epson Stylus Photo R2400

Making the profiles for the different Canvases on the R2400 I ran into a problem: getting sheets of canvas to load on the R2400. Loading from a roll is actually quite easy because the roll keeps it lined up when loading from the back. Loading a sheet is a problem because:
  1. If you try to load the canvas from the auto-sheet feed, it will start to load it, but the feeder can't grip the back to position it correctly.
  2. If you try to load it in the thick paper slot (which doubles as the roll feed) - the canvas isn't stiff enough for you to push it in all the way.
  3. If you take off the thick paper support and try to load it as if it was a roll, it will not load straight no matter how hard you try.
  4. If you pull down the front load tray and load it, it will go in just fine, but the printer assumes that if you are using the font load, it's because the paper is too thick to go in the thick paper feed and is therefore 1.2mm (~47mils) thick and will raise the head accordingly so nothing gets damaged. That's all well, but it's like trying to take a picture of something 2 feet away with the focus set for 6 inches - you get over spray.

Over spray
You have two options for loading canvas in the R2400: tape a "guide sheet" to the front of the canvas or pad the canvas to 47mils and use the front feeder.

Using a guide sheet is my preferred method especially because it gives you the entire printable surface to work with - using the front feed puts a half inch margin on the top and bottom. To use a guide sheet, just grab and sheet of paper that is the same width as the canvas you want to work with. For letter size and 11x17, this is easy - any sheet of copy paper will work. For 13x19 you'll have to do something creative like cut a sheet of letter size copy paper diagonally and make a 2-3 inch tall, 13 inch wide, rectangle. The packages of Inkjetart Fast Dry Gloss and Matte come with some really useful tape that is reusable and will work perfectly for this. Just tape the sheet of plain paper onto the bottom of the canvas and you're almost finished. The tricky part will be working out in your head how to pad your image in Photoshop. If you are adding a 3 inch strip of paper to a letter size sheet of canvas here is what you would do: first change the canvas size of the image to 8.5x11 - this will expand the image to the full size of the sheet. Now move the image around on that if you need to. Now go back into the canvas size dialog and add 3 inches to the top of the image (or 11 if you taped on a full sheet or whatever other size you used). Now go to print the image - Photoshop will warn you that clipping will occur because the image is too large, just continue. In the Print setup you'll need to make a custom paper size that adds the guide sheet. So in our 4 inch guide on a letter size sheet, you would make the paper 8.5x14 (you'll notice that is also legal size so in this case you could actually just use that pre-set one). The method for setting up a custom paper size is documented in your user manual.

The other method is the front load, but the head isn't "focused" if you use this method (see the points above) - how do we fix that? Make the media "thicker" The canvases we carry for the UltraChrome inks are 19-20 mils thick, so we need twice than and then some. I found that we also need something stiff to support the canvas. Solution: load the sheet of canvas along with the chip-board that comes with each pack and add two sheets of copy paper if you want it exactly 47 mils.
