Profiles
Custom vs. Generic Profiles
There has been issues using profiles with CS4 and Apple's Snow Leopard. There is a work around
To start, a custom profile made just for your machine is going to be better than a generic "canned" profile. It will be better because every printer, every batch of ink and every batch of paper are a little different - a custom profile will take into account all the differences and characteristics of the setup you are using. A generic profile is just that, generic. Essentially, it's a custom profile made for a particular machine that may or (more likely) may not be exactly the same as the machine you are using. Still, compared to no profile, a generic profile is much, much better. You will get better and more consistent color than you get by just using the automatic settings provided in the printer driver which are even more "generic."
We offer both generic profiles and a custom profiling service so you can get the most out of your printer. We charge you the lowest amount we possibly can to cover equipment and staffing - we'll make money on the paper and ink you use, rather than the profile service! Generic profiles are especially handy for testing out sample packs (especially being that they're free), and many of our serious users will use the generic profiles to evaluate papers to see which ones they want to purchase on a regular basis. Once they find a media they like and use regularly, then they have a custom profile made. If you have taken the time and money to calibrate and profile your monitor, you probably won't be satisfied with a generic profile for making serious prints. If you haven't gone through calibration, a custom profile is likely to be over-kill -- you won't get the colors on screen to match the print-outs. And until you do get serious about monitor calibration, a generic profile will be sufficient.
We offer LIMITED support on the profiles and workflow. If you are having trouble with your computer, start by calling the manufacturer of the computer. If you are having trouble installing the profile make sure you READ the INSTRUCTIONS carefully.
