Printing and Reviewing ink and paper usage
The "Test Print" features of the Epson 4000, 7600 and 9600 printers
We created an Excel Spreadsheet that you can use to calculate cost sq. foot and even overall cost, including the cost of the paper using the info from the Job report.
Some of the least used and known features of the 4000, 7600 and 9600 printers are the different options available in the "Test Print" menu. From this menu you can print the traditional Nozzle Check pattern. You can also print out a "Job Information" of the ink and paper usage of your last 9 print jobs. There is also a "Printer Status" report that lists all sorts of useful information about the life of the printer/inks and parts of the printer.
Doing a nozzle check also gives you a quick ink usage report. That this data is rounded to the nearest ml, whereas a "Job Detail" (see below) gives you accuracy to 1/1000 of a ml. Additionally, the media use gives only running length --not width. There's no status on the time used. But it does give a running total of all the ink that has ever been used by the printer and the total running length of media ever put through the printer --kind of an "odometer" reading in case you want to buy or sell the printer and wish to know how much use the printer has had.
Printer Status
The Printer Status. Lists pretty much everything about your printer, from the firmware version to how used the CR motor is. Also tells you pretty much everything about your ink cartridges, even how long they've been installed. We don't know what "Printable Sheet" means, so don't ask. |
Job Information
This is the "Job Information" report. The top line is actually the job for this report its self, so although there are 10 jobs shown, you really only get the last 9 jobs. |
Detail of Job #7. You'll notice it gives the name of the document, ink used, paper used, what interface the job came in over (Type-B indicates that we're using a firewire card), the User who submitted the print, the date/time and time taken.
So, lets print get into the "Test Print" menu! To start, you need to load a letter-size sheet of paper into the printer, now let's play with the menu a bit.
This is what the control panel on the 7600 and 9600 looks like for your reference (the 400's panel is different but similar).
Follow this sequence to print a report (make sure paper is loaded into printer first):
+ + + + to print a nozzle check |
+ + + + + to print a job report |
+ + + + + + to print a printer status report |
If you just want to quickly view, on the display panel, the the amount of ink and paper used, do this:
+
+

and now you can use and to scroll between the different jobs.
