New ink and paper monitoring features with the Epson 7600 and 9600 printers
Visit this page to learn how to print out these reports on your printer
While I was attending the Epson Pro-Graphics dealer meeting last week (May 13 - 15) , I was able to obtain some interesting information about how much data the new 7600/9600 are able to give you about ink usage, and the overall status of your printer.
The Intellidge micro-chips that are included on each 7600/9600 ink cartridge have developed into a love-hate relationship for users. Some of us hate them because the chips inhibit or slow down 3rd party ink development for these printers. But I guarantee you're going to love the wealth of information that they and these new printers are now able to give you.
Here's a quick snapshot I took of the printer status report that was printed out from a newly installed 9600, which up to that moment only had nine jobs printed on it, and all were just head alignments and nozzle checks:
The top part of the photograph lists each individual job: the name of the job, the date, how much paper was used, how much ink was used, and how long the printing took to complete. The bottom part of the photograph (where the hand is pointing) shows totals, the status of the printer and its cartridges.
Besides being able to tell you WHAT cartridges are in your printer, HOW LONG (and DATES of manufacture) they have been in your printer, and give more accurate remaining ink LEVELS, the new printers can now tell how much ink you've used on EACH JOB! Sensors also tell you how much media was used on each job. This new information will greatly simplify billing and help you estimate future jobs. (I'm not sure why it is showing "26 min." were used to do this nozzle check. Some of the other nozzle checks showed a time used of as long as "129 min.", so I'm sure this is not an accurate reflection of the total amount of time used to do a nozzle check. It probably indicates the total amount of time that elapsed before the user went on to the next job or nozzle check. I would presume that the user would be able to set "start" and "stop" options for this feature.)
By the way, the printer status showed a total ink usage for this printer of 274.8 ml of ink. The nine nozzle checks and head alignments had used up only 0.035 ml of ink, which means that just to prime the lines and heads took a little over 39 ml of ink from each of the 9600's seven 110 ml cartridges (while the 9600 will take the large 220 ml cartridges, Epson sells the printer with the smaller carts to keep down the price of the printer). I've often been told by Epson technicians that priming any new printer (7000 or 9000 series) uses up about 1/3 of the 110 ml cartridges (which would be 36.67 ml), so I guess they were almost dead-on. If you buy a 9600, you may want to also purchase a set of 220 ml carts, just to have them ready, since 9600 users tend to go through ink quite quickly (The 9600 and the 7600 can use 110 ml or 220 ml carts, or a combination of both).
