Frequently asked usage questions - Print Quality

Return to the index

Q: What steps should I try if I have horizontal banding?
A: The most common cause of horizontal banding are missing or deflected nozzles or a clogged print head. Print a nozzle check pattern and examine the printout with a 10x or better eye loupe to see if you have any missing or deflected nozzles. If nozzles are missing or deflected, run a cleaning cycle and print your document again. If no nozzles are missing or deflected, make sure you are using the correct driver settings for the type of media you're printing on. Also try printing at a higher resolution and turn off high-speed (bi-directional) printing.

Q: What steps should I try if I have vertical banding?
A: The most common cause of vertical banding is over-saturation of the media, usually created by paper "rippling". To correct this effect, decrease the saturation and lower the paper suction. If vertical banding is still apparent print the image with high speed off (uni-directional). If this corrects the issue, align the print head, as described on page 5-6 of the Users Guide.

Q: How many cleaning cycles should I run to correct missing or deflected nozzles?
A: You should run up to eight cleaning cycles and print a nozzle check pattern between each one so the printer can perform a more extensive cleaning each time. Note: Running cleaning cycles without printing a nozzle check between them causes the printer to use the same cleaning pressure level each time and may not clean all the nozzles thoroughly.

Q: What are the best driver settings to use with my paper type?
A: The SP7600/9600 driver lists most (if not all) EPSON media types. If your media type is not listed, see the documentation that came with the media. If you're using non-Epson media, please contact your vendor and ensure that the media is compatible with your printer and which driver setting will give the best results.

Q: Why do my fonts or images print out with jagged edges?
A: If fonts and images print with jagged edges the resolution of the file may be too low to print smoothly, or the file may contain PostScript data. You may need to purchase RIP (Raster Image Processing) hardware or software.
