OUR RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE EPSON 13" WIDE INKJET PRINTERS
(1270 vs. 2000P; vs. the 1200 and the 1160)

Ever since the 2000P was introduced in the Summer of 2000, the number one question we are asked every day is: "Which would you recommend, the 1270 or the 2000P?" There is not a simple answer without knowing your needs and priorities. There are so many variables to consider, we've decided to put together a comparison chart, along with our recommendations:

NEW EPSON BRAND OF LARGE-FORMAT MEDIA FOR 7500 & 9500

As many of you may know, there has been a real shortage of Epson brand large format media for the Epson Stylus Pro 7500 and 9500. Our own stocks have become much better in the past few weeks. Of particular interest to us has been two new, 100% cotton, watercolor papers made by Crane especially for Epson and the 7500/9500 pigmented inks. (Crane is the U.S. paper manufacturer that makes the paper for that green folding money in your pocket - in fact, they've had the contract since 1879!) Anyway, they make two new coated watercolor papers for Epson called, "Smooth Fine Art Paper" and "Textured Fine Art Paper". The "Smooth" is similar in feel to Somerset Velvet, and the "Textured" is similar in texture to Arches Cold Press (but is whiter). Both papers are available in rolls (24", 36" and 44") and in large sheets (24" x 30" and 36" x 44"). The roll stock weighs in at 225gsm, but the sheets are in a luxuriously THICK 425gsm! There's no problem with getting these through your 7500 or 9500, since these printers have a straight paper path that can even accommodate posterboard up to 1.5 mm or 65 mil thick! (An Epson rep told us that Graham Nash is reported to have said that this was one of the most beautiful "giclee" sheets he'd ever seen.) If you use the rolls, please note that they are on a 3" core, not the more common 2" core. You'll need to purchase Epson's "3-inch Tension Spindle" if don't already have one (we can order that for you). The larger, 3" cores help give these thicker art papers much less curl "memory". In fact, we're asking all our other fine art paper manufacturers to go to the 3" core. Our complete list of Epson media (for the 7500 & 9500) is found at:

"LUSTER" IN STOCK - EPSON'S NEW PREMIUM LUSTER PHOTO PAPER

The long awaited Epson Premium Luster Photo Paper is now in stock (only letter size right now - with all other sizes available in less than a week). This paper looks very similar to a real "luster" photographic paper surface. It's almost identical to Kodak's popular luster, "E" surface color print paper. Both the Premium Luster and the Premium Semigloss are RC "barrier" papers, meaning, that the base material is a polyethylene encapsulated paper, which allows one to really lay down heavy ink coverage without "cockling" or buckling the paper (caused by uneven paper fiber swelling, due to ink moisture) that can occur with some cast-coated papers.

The Luster has more texture than Epson's Premium Semigloss, which is preferred by many over the Semigloss. Both papers are 10.4 ml thick, 250gsm weight, and have an ISO brightness of "93". The Luster was designed specifically for use with the pigmented 2000P inks (the surface helps to hide the gloss or "reflection differential" you get when using the duller pigmented inks on glossy surface media -- even a little better than the Semigloss does). Both the Luster and the Semigloss work well with Epson dye inks, like the 870/1270 and Epson standard inks.

GREATER SAVINGS + availability in "ROLLS": Because Epson packages the Luster in 50-sheet boxes (vs. the 20-sheet packs for the Semigloss), the cost per sheet for the letter size Luster is only 70 cents vs. 85 cents for the Semigloss! Of interest to many will be the 8.3" and 13" wide ROLLS (32.8 feet long) of Luster, which will be available in one week. (Although Epson has plans to produce rolls of the Semigloss, no stocks are available, and no release date has been given by Epson.) To order the Luster, go to:

CONTINUED PRAISES FOR OUR LOW-COST EPSON REPLACEMENT INK CARTRIDGES:

Don Metz recently wrote to us with this comment about our low-cost Injetart Solutions replacement inks: "I recently purchased some replacement cartridges for my Epson 1200. I replaced the color cartridge this evening and was very pleased with the results. The color seems a bit "brighter" without excessive saturation and detail in the shadows was quite good. I fully did not expect to consider this replacement cartridge superior. I was just hoping that it would be the equal. If you or anyone else is interested, I compared the results using a printer test page from "www.digitaldog.net". You can expect me to order my Epson supplies from you in the future. Please feel free to share these comments however you choose."

While we continue to receive hundreds of orders (and virtually no returns) for these Epson compatible inks for the small desktop printers, some people are still hesitant to try these inks in the larger Epson printers, like the 3000, 5000 and 9000 (the 7000 is not yet available). Not to worry: With our 99.5+% reliability rating, you can be confident that these cartridges will perform flawlessly! And with these larger cartridges, the savings are even greater! Imagine getter a 5000 magenta/light magenta cartridge or cyan/light cyan cartridge (which usually run out in half the time of the yellow or black cartridges do) for only $19 -- compared to Epson's $69 price!

Your only concern might be if you were using your 5000 or 9000 to make color proofs from pre-press files. Our Inkjetart Solutions replacement inks may be slightly more brilliant in color gamut (than Epson standard inks) -- causing your proofs to look TOO GOOD, and giving the process color litho pressmen fits when trying to match color to these proofs. (Some people think that even the Epson standard inks already have a wider gamut that most 4-color litho process inks can match, without increasing the gamut even further by using our Inkjetart Solutions replacement inks!). However, if you are doing such things as posters and signage -- your clients will love it, and you'll love the extra profits! (Remember, our Inkjetart Solutions inks are no more lightfast than Epson's standard inks.) For more information, go to:

2000P PRICE REDUCTION

Were lowering our price on the Epson Stylus Photo 2000P. Epson's suggested retail price is $899.00, and our price has been $888. We're now lowering that price even further to $865.00, with FREE shipping ground to anywhere in the continental U.S.! Go to:

http://www.inkjetart.com/2000p/order.html

Don't be fooled by some places that sell the 2000P for lower prices, then hit you with excessive shipping charges. Or other places that offer you free media. Beware that much or all of their free paper may not be compatible with the 2000P pigmented inks, and end up costing you dearly in ink usage, without giving you acceptable results! Example: If you get 40 "free" sheets of 13x19 paper and print 40 12x18 images on those sheets, you could be spending about $162.00 on ink (based on an estimated cost of about $1.50 / 80 square inches of ink coverage), for prints that may be inferior to the results you could obtain from our recommended media. What papers to we recommend? That's one of the reasons for purchasing from us -- you get answers and support from people who actually use the 2000P!
