If you have any plans to purchase inkjet supplies, do it with a company that will help you make a difference in the lives of people who have been so devastated by recent natural disasters!

During the next 7 days, we'll GIVE YOU A 1% DISCOUNT on every order you place with Inkjetart. YOU then have the option of keeping that discount, or donating it to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Example: Purchase $100 in inkjet supplies, and we'll give you a $1 discount. You then have the option to give your $1 discount to the Red Cross; and your net order cost is is still $100.

OUR GOAL: Within the next 7 days, we want to do at least $100,000 in Inkjetart sales, producing $1,000 in discounts. We then hope most of you will give back your 1% discount, producing about $1,000 in donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. WILHELM GIVES PROOF: EPSON R200/R300 DYE INKS ARE MORE FADE-RESISTANT

In our last newsletter we said that independent Blue Wool Scale tests had shown much higher fade resistance for the Epson R200/R300 inks over other Epson dye inks, such as those used in the Epson 1280 and 7000/9000 printers.

A September 20, 2005 update from Wilhelm Imaging Research confirms our findings: In these latest "Lightfast Ratings", check out the column group, "6-Color Photo Dye Inks." The results for the R200/R300/R620 dyed inks are in the middle column of that group, flanked on both sides by the 890/1280 and 7000/9000 series inks.

Wilhelm doesn't test all three dye inks on all the Epson papers, but does do a comparison for the Epson ColorLife Photo Paper and the Epson Matte Paper Heavyweight. Because the ColorLife is a swellable polymer coated paper that protects the ink by encapsulating it, we weren't surprised that the R200/R300 improvement was only only 33% over the 1280 inks (going from 27 years to 36 years). The bigger difference is shown on the unprotected, Matte Paper Heavyweight, where longevity increased 67% over the 1280 inks (going from 18 years to 30 years).

Another high score for the R200/R300 series inks was the results listed for Epson's three "Premium" cut sheet Photo papers, Glossy, Luster and Semigloss. Premium Glossy hit 23 years, and both Premium Luster and Premium Semigloss hit 22 years. Although Wilhelm lists no comparison data for the 890/1280 inks, older (1/30/2000) Wilhelm data (from Inkjetart's archives) show the same 1270/1280 inks had a 9.5 years ("9 - 10 years") rating on the Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper -- which gives the R200/R300 series inks a 142% improvement over the older 1280 series inks!

While 23 years is less than one-half the UltraChrome (pigment) ink's results from the Epson 2200 of 56 years (we'd expect the R2400 to show similar results), this may be quite adequate for those who like the deep, rich colors produced by the Epson dye inks over what the pigment inks can deliver.

We continue to wonder why Epson doesn't introduce the R200/R300 series ink for the very popular 1280 printer. If you don't consider the slight changes from the model 1270 to the model 1280, this printer series and inkset have been going strong since February 2000. Which means that within another five months, the 1270/1280 will have been in production for SIX YEARS! No other printer has ever matched that kind of production run longevity, other than the old Epson Stylus Color 3000! And yes, Inkjetart continues to sell both the 1280 and R320 printers:

PRO EPSON INKS: Because of Epson's "Minimum Advertised Price" (MAP) restrictions, we are not allowed to advertise our Pro ink prices. (Epson Pro inks can be sold at a lower price, they just cannot be advertised below MAP. If you see a product advertised below MAP, there is something fishy going on.) Despite these MAP restrictions, you can easily find out Inkjetart's price just by clicking on "Buy One" and place it into your shopping cart (you can always remove it, if you don't like our price). Adding the "7-Cartridge Discount" will give you an even more significant discount:

GREATER AWARENESS FOR THE VALUE OF GOLD ARCHIVAL CD-R'S AND DVD-R'S

Several of our customers have written to tell us that two other companies are marketing and selling gold CD-R's: Light Impressions and Delkin. Actually, Light Impressions is just reselling Delkin's "eFilm" trademark brand of "Archival Gold" CD-R's. This brand claims to be...
  • "The 300 Year Disc"
  • "The most reliable CD-R on the planet"
  • made with 24k gold, that "stops CD rot"
  • made with "Patented Phthalocyanine dye" that makes "stored data easier to read"
Does this sound similar to the claims we've made for years about our Mitsui/MAM-A Gold Standard CD-R's? Mitsui/MAM-A, in Colorado Springs, is THE company that owns the patent on Phthalocyanine dye, and the only company to make a real 24k gold CD-R. Unlike other companies, Inkjetart buys our Mitsui/MAM-A Gold Standard CD-R's un-branded, without a any logos or branding. We do this for several reasons:
  • So you know you have the original Mitsui/MAM-A Gold Standard
  • You have a clean un-branded surface, to place your own info on the discs
  • Un-branded discs reduce our costs, and we pass the savings on to you

SAVE ON OUR MITSUI/MAM-A GOLD STANDARD CD-R'S

Our Mitsui/MAM-A Gold Standard CD-R's also offer these ADVANTAGES:
  • Our's store 700mb of data - they've opted for the 650mb capacity
  • Our's come in plain, shiny gold surface or with a white, inkjet printable surface - theirs come with only the shiny branded (their logo) surface
  • Our's come with a jewel case for each CD-R - theirs come only in bulk
  • Their 25-pack spindle is $36.99 (Delkin) to $39.99 (Light Impressions) Our un-branded Mitsui/MAM-A Gold Standard CD-R's (in individual jewel cases) are $34.75 for 25.
  • Their (Delkin) 100-Disc Spindle is $139.99 -- Our un-branded Mitsui/MAM-A Gold for 100; and we offer free shipping!
You can take advantage of this every-day savings at our Web site:
http://www.inkjetart.com/mitsui/index.html

EVEN GREATER CD-R SAVINGS? We could offer you even greater savings if we offered our Mitsui/MAM-A Gold Standard CD-R's in spindle and bulk packs like Delkin and Light Impressions.

PLEASE GIVE US YOUR INPUT (choose all that apply):
I prefer the plain, shiny, un-branded surface
I prefer the white, inkjet printable surface

DISC STORAGE: I'm interested in archival sleeves, or pages (and binders) for storing written CD-R's and DVD-R's
I prefer the individual jewel cases - I don't like bulk packs
Please offer both individual jewel cases and BULK packs.
Please continue below, if you chose this last option:
I prefer 25-pack spindles
I prefer 100-pack spindles for even greater savings
I prefer 100-shrink-pack (bulk, no spindle) for even greater savings
I would like all 3 spindle/bulk choice

GOLD vs. SILVER DVD-R's -- IS THE COST WORTH THE 33% GREATER LONGEVITY?

Mitsui/MAM-A recently introduced a 24k gold DVD-R that has a data longevity rating of 100 years. This is only an additional 25 years over the 75-years rating for their silver DVD-R. (Mitsui/MAM-A uses a real silver reflective surface, not aluminum like other manufacturers use.) Both DVD-R's use a special fade-resistant dye that Mitsui/MAM-A has patented. This dye is NOT the same "Patented Phthalocyanine Dye Technology" that is used in Mitsui/MAM-A's CD-R's.

The stronger Phthalocyanine dye used in their CD-R's is not compatible with DVD drive writers (the laser can't "burn" through Phthalocyanine dye at the speeds necessary for writing the more densely compacted DVD-R's). Even so, Mitsui/MAM-A's patented dye for their DVD's is still much more fade-resistant than what the other DVD manufactures are using, which is why their DVD's are rated 75 (silver) and 100 years (gold).

Mitsui/MAM-A will not reveal the name of the dye used in their DVDs, because of their past experience with other manufacturers that have tried to rip-off the "Phthalocyanine" name in their own CD-R advertising. Mitsui/MAM-A feels that if other brands knew the name of the new patented dye that Mitsui/MAM-A uses for their DVD's, other brands would try to use that name, too, in their ads and claims, just like they've done with the Phthalocyanine Dye Technology for CD-R's.

NEW LOWER SILVER DVD-R PRICE: From $2.79 each to $1.89 each! In preparation for making their new Gold DVD's, Mitsui/MAM-A was able to reduce manufacturing costs for their Silver DVD-R's. We are passing those savings on to you:

http://www.inkjetart.com/mitsui/dvd.html

The main reason for choosing Mitsui/MAM-A DVD-R's over other brands, is their more fade-resistant, patented dye. The Mitsui/MAM-A Silver DVD-R's offers a longevity that is 75% of their gold rating, but at a cost that is about two-thirds the price of their new Gold DVD-R (the Gold DVD-R's are expected to cost about $3.00 each).

However, our Inkjetart customers may still be interested in the additional 25 years longevity rating that the 24k gold reflective surface provides, despite the increase costs of their Gold DVD-R....

PLEASE GIVE US YOUR INPUT (choose all that apply):
Stick with the Mitsui/MAM-A Silver DVD-R's
Please offer both the Mitsui/MAM-A Silver and Gold DVD-R's

I prefer the plain, shiny, un-branded surface
I prefer the white, inkjet printable surface

I prefer the DVD+R over the DVD-R

DISC STORAGE: I'm interested in archival sleeves, or pages (and binders) for storing written CD-R's and DVD-R's
I prefer the individual jewel cases - I don't like bulk packs
Please offer both individual jewel cases and BULK packs.
Please continue below, if you chose this last option:
I prefer 25-pack spindles
I prefer 100-pack spindles for even greater savings
I prefer 100-shrink-pack (bulk, no spindle) for even greater savings
I would like all 3 spindle/bulk choice

NEW GLAMOUR 2 VENEER COATING: PROTECTION, ELEGANCE, & EASY APPLICATION

At the recommendation of the staff at Bair Art Editions (BairArtEditions.com), Inkjetart has chosen to offer the new Glamour 2 Veneer coating to their customers. Bair Art Editions prefers "Glamour" for coating their canvas giclee prints over ANY product they have ever used.

Glamour 2 is a museum quality, post-printing coating that is designed to protect, preserve and enhance fine art and photographic prints produced on digital inkjet printers.

This "giclee veneer" protects and preserve prints by inhibiting harmful Ultraviolet light from burning out optical brightener additives and other fluorescent whitening additives, which inhibits the canvas and paper from yellowing. It also protects against moisture and abrasion. Glamour 2 is especially useful in sealing the surface from the harmful effects of oxidation. This is even more important with canvas prints that do not have the protection of glass.

Glamour 2 often enhances prints by increasing density, which brightens the color of printed images. For example, the "gloss" or "semi-gloss" finishes can make blacks darker, reds deeper, and yellows brighter.

Glamour 2 has been specifically developed as a water based product to avoid the unpleasant and hazardous fumes given off by solvent based products. It is also easy to clean-up, using just running water. Glamour 2 is a perfect compliment to all the "water-resistant" canvas media we sell: Glamour 2 also works well with many of our matte surface fine art inkjet papers to create stunning gloss/semi-gloss fine art prints (We suggest you test first). Ultrachrome Matte Black Ink users can now produce gloss/semi-gloss prints with richer, more saturated color, and even deeper blacks.

Artists can also paint on top of the applied coating. Glamour 2 has been known to work with various artist paints for embellishment, however it is always recommended that you perform a test with a small scrap of coated canvas to avoid a negative reaction.

Glamour 2 is available in Gloss and Matte finishes. The Gloss and Matte can be mixed together, enabling you to creatively produce your own perfect look and feel. Whether it be gloss, semi-gloss, semi-matte -- the choice is completely yours. F.Y.I. Bair Art Editions uses 2-3 times as much Gloss as they do the Matte. They've found that most of their customers like a semi-gloss look, and it only takes about 1-part matte to 2-parts gloss to create the semi-gloss look they like. They also use the Illuminata Artist Canvas (a matte finish) for the majority of their canvas jobs, because with the Glamour 2 coating, they can obtain ANY final finish they want with ONE canvas!.

In smaller production, Glamour 2 should be roll/brush applied. Only one coat is necessary. Glamour 2 can also be brush applied, sprayed, and used in roll coaters. The product has self-leveling qualities that make it virtually ideal for one-step hassle free coating and no streaks. Glamour 2 can be rolled on with a dense foam roller (30% dilution with water is typical), sprayed on with an HVLP gun (50% dilution with water), or used with a roll coating machine (50% dilution). Inkjetart carries a foam roller kit that is perfect for the Glamour 2 (you'll find it on the same web page).

Bair Art Editions uses both the dense foam rollers for small jobs, and the HVLP gun for jobs that involve a large number of prints. They roll the foam rollers back and forth very quickly, trying to thin out and evenly apply the coating. Bair Art finds using a HVLP gun uses about 50% less Glamour material compared to using the foam rollers. It takes about 3-4 passes with the spray gun to equal the amount of material that can be applied with the foam rollers (even when you roll rapidly to thin out as much as possible). For this reason, the spray gun allows more control. This is especially helpful on fine art papers, so that the paper doesn't get as damp. However, if you don't mind the longer dry time, and like a deep, rich, semi-gloss (or semi-matte, depending on your mixing ratio of gloss to matte) look on your fine art papers, the roller application is the best.

Bair Art Editions use the model #43430-4VGA from Harbor Freight ($64.00), and can easily coat a dozen 30 x 40 canvas prints in 15 minutes with this HVLP spray gun (two coats, with no dry time between each coat, using overlapping passes). NOTE: This gun requires an air compressor and the use of another air regulator / filter unit between the gun and the compressor. You'll also need additional hose and fittings. Total set up is about $250.

The drying time for this product depends upon its dilution ratio. The more you dilute, the faster it will dry. Bair Art Editions' experience (located in dry SLC, UT) has shown an overnight dry-time for most jobs is quite adequate when the proper dilution is used, and some jobs dry within just a few hours.

Bair Art Editions always coats their canvas before stretching, and to date, none of their clients have had any problem with cracks in their coatings. This coating does not get hard or brittle and crack over time like many others are known to do.

Glamour 2 is currently undergoing testing by RIT, and tests results should be available within a few months. Glamour 2 is available in pints or gallons:

BEST INPUT RESOLUTION FOR EPSON PRINTERS

The following article was written by Inkjetart's IT/Webmaster, Chris Bair.

Many of our readers come across this issue from time to time: what is the best resolution for my images with my Epson printer? Note that we are speaking about the resolution in Photoshop, not the PRINT resolution that you select in the driver. Although they can use similar numbers, they're not related.

Back in January 2004 we did and article on "Resolution basics for scanning and inkjet printing". Included in that article are some very helpful tips about what resolutions to use. Back when that article was published, the only way to determine the native resolution of a printer was to print images with different resolutions until you didn't see any artifacts from resizing.

Click the button above to get Picasa for FREE
WE NOW HAVE A NEW TOOL: Google's free PICASA program (Windows only - it's similar to iPhoto on the Mac). Most Pro photographers will not be familiar with this program as it's mainly targeted to consumers as a sort of "virtual shoebox" for their digital photos (see a review on http://arstechnica.com/reviews/apps/photo-albums.ars). One really handy feature in Picasa that we have never seen in any other program is a little snippet of text in the print area that tells you what the actual native resolution of the printer is. Picasa automatically resizes the images to the native resolution of the printer before printing so you get the best output possible regardless of the image's actual resolution - and it tells you what it's going to resize it to! Using this information we can finally put the argument to rest.

Here's what Picasa Reports:
  • On Pro Printers (4800, 4000, 7600, 9600 etc...) 360.0ppi is the native resolution unless you are printing borderless in which case it is 370.0ppi. This means you could also use 180 and 185 respectively for large images (11x17 or larger) to save yourself some processing time.
  • On Desktop Printers (R2400, R1800, C86, C82, R200, R800 etc... - I tested all of the ones listed) 720.0ppi is the native resolution unless you are printing borderless in which case it is 741.0ppi. This means you could also use 360 or 180 and 370 and 185 respectively for large images (11x17 or larger) to save yourself some processing time.
If you use ANY OTHER resolution: be it 300, 320, 270, 480, 150 or otherwise YOU WILL GET nearest neighbor interpolation artifacts. It should be noted that the math on the borderless resolutions doesn't seem to add up (i.e.: should it be 370.5ppi native res on the pro printers if it's 741.0ppi on the desktop?) well, this is what we have to go off. Picasa reports all the resolutions with a ".0" so we can only assume it is ".0" like it says.

We haven't ever really seen much of a difference between 360 and 720ppi that would justify the additional time involved in printing (note this is the INPUT res, not the PRINTING res for PRINTING you'll normally want to use 1440dpi or higher). If you are working with your images in Photoshop we at Inkjetart recommend using 360/370ppi (depending on if you are going to print borderless) for small images less than 11x17 and you can opt to use 180/185ppi for the larger ones.

A DIFFERENT WAY TO DEAL WITH RESOLUTION: Many of our customers and the users of our forum (http://www.inkjetart.com/forum/index.php) have pointed out that Qimage is one way to avoid the issue of "which resolution to use" entirely. To use Qimage you first get your images ready in Photoshop, then you save them and print using Qimage. Qimage automatically resizes the images to the correct resolution (much like Pisasa does) but also does color management and many other cool tricks (such as letting you print longer than 44"). It's almost like a poor man's RIP at only $49.95. The biggest issue with Qimage is that it only runs on Windows unless you want to run Virtual PC on your Mac.
