On May 10th, Epson announced: "New Epson Stylus Photo R2400, Epson Stylus Pro 4800, 7800 and 9800 Inkjet Printers and New Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink Technology Mark Defining Moment in History of Professional Printing."
Epson says that their new printers "...incorporate forward-thinking designs and breakthrough new 8-color ink technology, resulting in a final print of uncompromising quality."
"Imagine producing archival prints with amazing color fidelity, gloss-level, and scratch resistance, while providing consistently stable colors that significantly outperform lesser ink technologies. Imagine producing professional neutral and toned black and white prints with higher density levels with virtually no metamerism or bronzing.
"Incorporating our latest 1-inch wide printhead, these printers produce almost twice the print performance of our previous Stylus Pro 7600 and Stylus Pro 9600. Additionally the Stylus Pro 4800 is approximately 20% faster than the Stylus Pro 4000. While an astonishing resolution of up to 2880 x 1440 dpi delivers a level of image quality that even exceeds our previous best."
NEW INK SET: The key to this technology is the new UltraChrome K3 ink set. Epson's all new 8-color ink set incorporates three unique levels of black, which along with new color pigment technology, dramatically improves both color and black and white prints. Archival prints from this new ink set have expanded color gamut, a better gloss level, and are more scratch resistance.
Utilizing a unique three level black ink technology, Epson UltraChrome K3 ink significantly improves overall gray balance while enhancing midtone and highlight detail yielding a smoother tonal range. And by virtually eliminating metamerism and bronzing, both black and white and color prints can be produced with the look and feel of a traditional photograph while utilizing all the advantages of a digital workflow. In addition, proprietary Epson screening technology, developed specifically for black and white printing, produces outstanding image quality with no color crossover or color cast. EPSON STYLUS PHOTO R2400 (13" Wide Desktop Printer) - Estimated Price: $849.99
This new printer will replace the 2200, but NOT the R1800. Although the R1800 does not use the K3 ink set, it is still $300 less, and does do a much better job than the 2200 on gloss and luster prints. The R2400 has the rear-feed (thicker paper) capabilities of the 2200, and the newer K3 ink technology. Limited availability is expected in late May. For more info and to pre-order, go to: http://www.inkjetart.com/2400/
EPSON STYLUS PRO 4800 (17" Wide Desktop Printer) - Estimated Price: $1,995.00
This printer will eventually replace the 4000. It looks and acts virtually the same as the 4000, except that it prints about 20% faster, costs $200 more, and has the new K3 ink technology. Limited availability is expected in late May. For more info and to pre-order, go to: http://www.inkjetart.com/4800/
EPSON STYLUS PRO 7800 (24" Wide Format Printer) - Estimated Price: $2,995.00
This printer will replace the 7600, but will not be available until Fall 2005 (Epson is warning, that this will probably be "late" Fall.) Besides the new K3 ink set, this printer's 1-inch wide printhead, produces almost twice the print speed of the 7600! For more info and to pre-order, go to: http://www.inkjetart.com/7800/
EPSON STYLUS PRO 9800 (44" Wide Format Printer) - Estimated Price: $4,995.00
This printer will replace the 9600, but will not be available until Fall 2005 (Epson is warning, that this will probably be "late" Fall.) Besides the new K3 ink set, this printer's 1-inch wide printhead, produces almost twice the print speed of the 9600! For more info and to pre-order, go to: http://www.inkjetart.com/9800/
Joseph Holmes has been a landscape photographer for 35 years, and Epson has featured his images in many of their promotions. He was allowed to beta test the new 9800 printer and the new UltraChrome K3 inkset (for use in the R2400, 4800, 7800 and 9800 printers).
Your editor's first meeting with Joseph was several years ago when he helped Lyson USA introduce the "Small Gamut" method of printing monochrome images (Joseph is the inventor and patent holder). Mr. Holmes is the author of ColorBlind Prove it! software for monitor calibration with its patented visual calibration system. Joseph is also the creator of an RGB working space ("Ekta Space PS 5, J. Holmes") which has been widely adopted by imaging professionals. Since 2002 he has been teaching workshops on color management and imaging for fine print making. (While your editor has never been to one of Joseph Holmes' workshops, I have been impressed in my past conversations with him. Others have told me that his style of teaching is very thoughtful and unassuming -- much different than others in his field, who often make you feel "stupid" for asking questions "everyone" should know ;-)
With this background, I think you'll find his comments on the UltraChrome K3 ink set very authoritative, useful and in depth:

Those of you living in Salt Lake City and Utah still may not have heard that InkjetART has a Self-Serve Epson 4000 printing station (since Nov. 2004), where YOU can make your own large-format inkjet prints YOUR way --until you can justify buying your own printer!
InkjetART discontinued selling Epson compatible inks a few months ago, but we still have some cartridges and bulk inks available, that we are offering at huge discounts (dealers buying in volume are welcome to call for even higher discounts).
