So, I had another "heads appear to be clogged" problem. Clearly caused by leaving the printer on for about two hours without printing, or at least that's all I could figure that I'd done differently than normal. Ran the head cleaning cycles, and got the "rotating clogged heads" problem that I'd written about before, and that others have mentioned. The last two heads to show a problem were the cyan and yellow, which printed perfectly for the first three cleaning cycles. Then I got an error message, SET INK CRTG and the printer refused to move forward. The manual says to try reinstalling the cartridge, and if it doesn't fix it, replace the cartridges.

Tried that. Bummer, no fix. Just put two new cartridges in and everything's fine. I'm now out a half-cartridge each of yellow and cyan. This printer is really expensive, for no good reason IMHO.

Anyone else have this happen?

And yes, I'm going to whine at Epson Pro. I just hope they don't suggest shipping me another printer. Tired of that drill.

Sounds like the chips failed, ask them for 2 new carts. And then offer to trade it for the new 4800, since you've had SO many problems. That might be worth the trouble of receiving a new printer.

You may also want to try cleaning the chips with some rubbing alcohol - even an errant fingerprint can mess up the conductivity of the contacts (and some times it can take a while for the oxidation to occur)

I did clean the contacts on the cart using Eclipse lens cleaner, which is one heck of a solvent. Wonder if I should have cleaned the contacts inside the printer too?

The solvent is likely to be too strong, I meant what I said and I said what I meant - alcohol is the best to use.

I had that book from my Elementary School Library - for 4 years. Fortunately the max fine was $5.

I can recite all of Finding Nemo and I'm working on the Incedibles.

Tim - go ahead and call about this, but you should also try this:

http://www.inkjetart.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1484

It appears that there IS a problem with some batch of cartridges. It also appears that there are tricks that seem to fix the problem regardless of whether the carts are bad or not. I've had to do the quick-push reset twice, but basically the bad cartridges are going to expire normally and empty instead of being replaced.

Thanks ednaz.. I've spoken to my Epson rep and they're trying to get a replacement cartridge for me (hopefully for a different colour as I've had to buy a new light cyan in the meantime)
