Epson News Release provides some interesting information, such as: "The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 prints up to 1.9 times faster than any previous Stylus Pro printer with the help of a new one-inch-wide print head packed with 180 nozzles per channel." ...."A 'Dual CMYK' ink mode is available for different applications and media types that enable users to dedicate all eight channels for running two identical sets of cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks simultaneously. The Dual CMYK mode provides an ideal combination of high image quality and even faster print speeds (approximately 1.9 times faster than the printer's photographic mode) for applications such as GIS, CAD or plain paper printing. see note

Utilizing Epson UltraChrome™ Ink technology, you'll produce archival prints with amazing color fidelity, while providing consistently stable colors that significantly outperform standard dye ink technologies. In order to maximize the use of this remarkable ink technology, we've developed a unique 8-channel print head capable of handling eight separate ink cartridges simultaneously. This allows the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 to handle both Photo Black and Matte Black inks at the same time in order to maximize the black density on virtually any media type.

Handling virtually any media type in roll or cut-sheet up to 17" wide, the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 even incorporates a high-capacity paper tray capable of handling cut-sheet media up to 17"x 22". The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 Professional Edition (#C511001PRO) includes a ColorBurst RIP and a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet card for a MSRP of $2195 ($400 more than the standard SP4000, which sells for $1795). For the professional that would like to have his or her printer accessible on a network, the Ethernet card feature alone is worth $239. But the Epson / ColorBurst RIP adds probably the biggest value, by providing true Postscript capabilities. The ColorBurst RIP claims to give the user better color gamut than the standard Epson print driver and allows for completely neutral black and white printing (no metamerism under any light source). The new Epson/ColorBurst RIP has these features:

The 4000 has been replaced by the Epson 4800. New 4000 printers are impossible to get.



Will there be a bulk feed system for the 4000? Bulk feed systems use 4 or 8 ounce bottles of ink. The entire reason you have a bulk feed system in smaller printers is that their cartridges hold 18-20 ml of ink so you need to rig up something to make them "larger" With 110 ml (4 ounce) and 220 ml (8 ounce) cartridges *AS PART OF THE MACHINE* who would invest the resources to engineer a bulk feed system when the printer essentially has one built into the machine?

The question is better phrased as: will there be 3rd party inks I can use in the 4000? They may be, but they are not likely to have the same qualities as the Epson ink and will represent some form of sacrifice (color, media compatibility, longevity, etc...) for the cheaper price.
