Media recommendations for Epson UltraChrome Inks
Also check out Epson's print longevity information for the Ultrachrome inks
The Epson UltraChrome inks are a PIGMENTED inkset.
The ADVANTAGES of this ink are:
- Very lightfast. About 5 to 10 times more fade-resistant than the dye inks that are used in most other inkjet printers.
- Extremely water-resistant.
The DISADVANTAGE of this ink is:
- Fewer inkjet papers are compatible with pigment inks than with dye inks.
For this reason, you might be interested in some of our MEDIA SUGGESTIONS:
BEST "COMMERCIAL" or NON-FINE ART PAPERS?
- EPSON ENHANCED MATTE (rolls here)
Enhanced Matte is one of Epson's best selling papers, because it produces great photographic quality prints, it's very affordable, and has a hefty 10.3 mil thickness
- INKJETART MICRO CERAMIC LUSTER - Profiles Available
It's almost an exact match for the Epson Premium Luster paper (it's actually a slightly brighter white), Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl, Lyson Professional Photo Satin, or Lumijet Genuine Pearl but costs MUCH less. UltraChrome inks work great on this semi-gloss paper that has a luster finish similar to Kodak's popular "E" surface paper. It has the weight (250 gsm, 10.2 mil thick) and feel of a real photograph.
- INKJETART DUO BRITE MATTE, PREMIUM AND DELUXE - Profiles Available
All three of the Duo Brite Matte papers give excellent results with the UltraChrome inks (be sure to use the Matte Black ink for best results) The Premium and Deluxe prints look much like prints made on Enhanced Matte but they're also double sided. The Regular Duo Brite Matte still prints great and is extremely inexpensive.
- EPSON PREMIUM LUSTER PHOTO PAPER (rolls here)
Without a doubt, this is Epson's most popular "commercial" paper. UltraChrome inks work great on this semi-gloss paper that has a luster finish similar to Kodak's popular "E" surface paper. PLPP has the weight (250 gsm, 10.4 mil thick) and feel of a real photograph.
- INKJETART MICRO CERAMIC GLOSSY - Profiles Available
This is a fairly new paper, it's almost an exact match for the Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, Ilford Galerie Smooth Gloss, Lyson Professional Photo Gloss or Lumijet Ultra Gloss but cost MUCH less. UltraChrome inks work great on this high-gloss paper. It comes in two weights and is also available double-sided and on rolls.
- INKJETART MICRO CERAMIC GLOSS LINE - Profiles Available
Check out the entire line of Micro Ceramic Gloss, We have 2 sided, Heavyweight, Light weight and more!
- EPSON PREMIUM GLOSSY PHOTO PAPER (rolls here)
This high-gloss paper has the weight (250 gsm, 10.4 mil thick) and feel of a real photograph, so it is very popular with photographers.
NOTE: The Ceramic Luster, Premium Semi-gloss and Premium Luster papers are "micro or nano porous" papers. They are "RC" papers that have moisture barrier (usually made of polyethylene) to prevent "cockling" or waviness when you lay down heavy ink loads. The micro-porous ingredient (glass or silica) provides little ink well receptors for instant drying and better image uniformity. Micro-porous papers also act like an atmospheric "sponge" causing inks to fade quicker (especially the cyan dye inks) if the print is not protected from rapid air exchange by either glass, protective sleeves or lamination. With the UltraChrome pigmented inks, your prints on these papers should last over 40 years, according to Epson and Wilhelm Imaging Research before noticeable fading occurs (indoor lighting - 450 Lux, 12 hours per day - protected by glass). Dye inks (i.e. in the Epson 1280 printers) will only last 5 to 9 years on these papers.
- PICTORICO Professional Photo Gallery Hi-Gloss White Film
The original "Cibachrome" (now called Ilfochrome) uses a polyester film base (not paper). Pictorico has a similar product (PGHG White Film) made for inkjet, using a micro-porous coating, but it does not have quite the mirror-gloss of the Cibachrome. The UltraChrome pigmented inks print extremely well on this product, and Pictorico considers it a very archival combination when using pigment inks. PGHG White Film is available in sheets, up to 13 x 19
- INKJETART FAST-DRY MATTE CANVAS - Profiles Available
One of only three canvases we have found that will print on the 2200 - also works with other pigmented inks and dye inks as well.
- INKJETART FAST-DRY GLOSSY CANVAS - Profiles Available
The second one we have found that will print on the 2200 - also works with other pigmented inks and dye inks as well.
FINE ART PAPERS:
NOTE: USE THE MATTE BLACK INK on these fine art papers, rather than the Photo Black ink, if you want the richest black (D-Max). Read our "Choosing the Right UltraChrome Black Ink Mode":

- ILLUMINATA FINE ART INKJET PAPERS - Profiles Available
Double-sided, Single Sided, Bright White and Naturally White fine art papers. As a whole, fine art papers tend to be pretty pricey. - Moab Entrada FINE ART INKJET PAPER
Entrada™ Fine Art is a dual sided 100% cotton rag paper. It utilizes multiple receiving layers which equate to a superior ink load capacity allowing for features unique to Entrada™, including water resistance, instant drying and prints with incredible detail and excellent tonality. - ARCHES INFINITY
Arches Infinity is a 100% cotton mould-made paper featuring a proprietary coating designed for fine art photography and print making with pigment or dye-based inks on inkjet printers. - HAHNEMUHLE PHOTO RAG - Imported from Germany
Made of 100% cotton rag. Acid-free, with a neutral pH. This paper has a smooth matte surface with very little texture. - CRANE MUSEO II
Crane considers Museo II the world's finest acid free, double-sided, fine art inkjet paper. Available in two weights, the totally new Museo II is made from 100% cotton fibers (the purest source of cellulose), which are processed with micro-filtered, naturally occurring, Artesian well water. This fine art paper is also buffered with calcium carbonate to prevent environmental acidification (e.g. yellowing).
- EPSON VELVET FINE ART PAPER
This paper is brand new from Epson, and may be a little hard to obtain for a while. Until then, you can obtain virtually the same product as "Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet" (see below).
- EPSON WATERCOLOR PAPER - RADIANT WHITE
One of the best printing fine art papers around is Epson's own, and it's also one of the least expensive (compared to other "fine art inkjet papers). The reason it's so inexpensive is because it's a wood pulp paper, and not a cotton rag paper like some of the other fine art papers. This means that the paper is not considered "archival". Despite this, your UltraChrome ink images should still have good indoor fade resistance on this paper.
- SOMERSET PHOTO ENHANCED VELVET - Imported from England
Somerset Photo Enhanced, developed and imported by Legion Paper. It is a "mould" made paper, which is the closest thing to a hand-made paper that you can get from a machine. Made of 100% cotton rag. Acid-free, with a neutral pH. This is the whitest of all the fine art papers inkjet papers. Somerset has been around a LONG time. Somerset Velvet Radiant White (the original, uncoated version) is and was the #1 paper used for about a decade in the Iris giclee industry. Somerset Photo Enhanced Textured is the coated version of that paper. Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet and Epson Somerset Velvet are the slightly smoother, coated versions (but still have MUCH more texture and character than Hahnemuhle. Photo Rag).
